During her residency at Edenhope Artist Residency, Nicci Rossel explored themes of place, memory and psychic repair through her textile practice. Working with old, damaged and discarded cloth, Nicci was drawn to the intimate connection between fabric and the body, particularly the traces of daily life held within worn linens, cottons, wool and abandoned threads.
At EAR, Nicci experimented with materials and techniques inspired by the Edenhope landscape, including eco-dyeing, rusting cloth, stitching into op-shop textiles and weaving with found objects. Through the process of repairing and remaking imperfect materials, she explored the idea of internal pathways and the ways stitching can become a metaphor for repairing and making sense of lived experience.
Her work considered the relationship between the physical landscape and the internal landscape, bringing together found materials, careful handwork and contemplation to explore what it means to repair, transform and give new life to things that have been discarded.
